Sources of Fern's Garden Products

Fern's Garden is dedicated to the fair treatment of artisans the world over (see About Us). We want you to know that we make every effort to ensure that the products you purchase at fernsgarden.com have been made in an ethical way. In the lower right hand corner of every product page on the site, you will find a seal that tells you how and where the product was made.

USA: Most of our items are made in America, and we are proud to focus our buying on American artisans and products. The American artist has become an endangered species in this time where so much is being made offshore. Please join us in supporting the American artisan.

Canada: Canadian artists find themselves in the same position as those of America and Europe, competing with less expensive copies of their work flooding in from overseas. Labor standards in our northern neighbor are among the highest in the world, and we are proud to carry many of their beautiful products.

Fair Trade: We are strong supporters of the Fair Trade Federation and proudly buy from its members. This organization works to ensure fair wages and good employment opportunities to economically disadvantaged artisans and farmers worldwide.

Ethical: Some of the companies we support make a huge difference in communities abroad but do not belong to the Fair Trade Federation. They support the artists of those communities, and frequently contribute to infrastructure improvements such as schools, sidewalks and water. We are proud to work with such companies.

Europe: Many of the artisans of Europe have found themselves in the same position as those in North America, competing with less expensive copies of their work flooding in from overseas. We are proud to support our colleagues across the Atlantic!

Australia: Many of the artisans of Australia have found themselves in the same position as those in North America, competing with less expensive copies of their work flooding in from overseas. We are proud to support our colleagues "down under"!

Japan: Japan was once itself a source of cheap labor, but this country now has some of the highest labor standards in the world. Consequently, its artisans often find themselves in the same position as those in the U.S.: competing with less expensive copies of their work flooding in from overseas.

Latin America: From Mexico to Peru… These are unique, museum quality products that are hand made in the villages of Latin America. These items are intricate and beautiful. Although most are made by individual artists doing their best to make a living in a tough economy, these manufacturers are unable to assure us of their fair labor practices.

Overseas: It happens that some of our American artisans do their designing in the U.S.A. but choose to go overseas to produce their work. Since we have an established clientele for their work and it is truly original (not knock-offs), we continue to carry them. These artists tell us that the factories producing their work in China are clean and that the workers are happy. Also, we do not want to miss out on the true museum quality art produced in Asia. For example, we order from a Chinese company called China Star that produces truly beautiful work…we do not want to discriminate against the Chinese artisan! You will find only a very small portion of our product mix falls into this category, as we prefer to focus on manufacturers who can assure us of their fair labor practices.
